Virginia Lee Cowan Coatney, 88, of Flemingsburg, formerly of Carlisle and Lexington, widow of Robert Coatney, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the Pioneer Trace Nursing Home in Flemingsburg. She was born on October 7, 1927 in Nicholas County, the daughter of the late Dr. G.T. And Edna Roberts Cowan.
A devout Christian, she was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Carlisle, and also a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington. Virginia attended Georgetown College and the University of Kentucky and was a member of the Carlisle Women's Club in her younger years. She had a passion for music and was a very gifted pianist and organist having played over 40 years at the First Baptist Church of Carlisle, also accompanying the local high school choirs as well as the church choir. Virginia served as House Mother for FarmHouse Fraternity at the University of Kentucky from 1985 to 2004. She loved her 'FarmHouse Boys' and was an avid UK fan. Virginia also had a great love for people and enjoyed being on the go.
She is survived by: two daughters, Karlyn (Frankie) Vice of Flemingsburg, and Susan Wright of Lexington; grandchildren, Nona (Andrew) McCoy of Washington, DC, Rebecca (Randy) Bowers of Lexington, Sarah (Nat) Morris of Tampa, FL, and Robert Isaac (Kelly) Wright of Lexington; and great-grandchildren, Hanora McCoy, John Cowan McCoy, and Madison Elizabeth Morris. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, G.T. Cowan, Jr., and Richard Blake. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Carlisle, 345 N. Locust St., officiated by Pastor Jerry Cowan. Visitation will be 11am to 2pm Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in the Carlisle Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jim Cowan, John Cowan, Jeff Cowan, Billy Glen Cowan, Robert Isaac Wright, and Bill Guthrie. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Farmhouse Fraternity.
