Oscar (O.P.) Kane Jr.

Oscar Peter (O.P.) Kane Jr., age 96, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on June 1, 2019 at his residence with family by his side. He was born on May 13, 1923 in Cynthiana, Kentucky.

Mr. Kane married Bobby Jean Porter, also of Cynthiana, in 1948, who preceded him in death in 1992. Also preceding him in death were his brother James Kane and sister Mary Elizabeth Davis. He is survived by his daughter Connie Kane Moore, son Randy Kane, and four grandchildren: Rebecca Moore, Leah Moore, Matthew Moore all from Lexington, and Chris Kane of Flemingsburg. He also leaves behind his best friend Jim Farley of Flemingsburg and a devoted caregiver and beloved friend Christina Hampton of Maysville.

Oscar was raised in Cynthiana, Kentucky, the son of the late Oscar P. Kane Sr. and Daisy Kane. He was a graduate of Cynthiana High School and attended the American Academy School of Horology in Denver, Colorado where he learned the art of watch making. He moved with his wife to Flemingsburg in 1957 where he owned and operated Kane Jewelers for 35 years. His success in business can be directly attributed to his work ethic and natural mechanical ability. His attention to detail was legendary and he took pride in the fact that his customers were always satisfied. Oscar was an avid golfer and a member of the Flemingsburg Country Club where he spent many years enjoying golf with his family and friends. He was also a member of the Fleming County Chamber of Commerce, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, and The American Legion.

Corporal Oscar P. Kane, Jr. served in the United States Maine Corps. and was a veteran of World War II. He earned several medals including the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He served from 1943 to 1945 with distinction as a Marine. Corporal Kane was at Pearl Harbor, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima where he said, “I only got out of there by the grace of God”. He was a Japanese Prison Guard and received other commendations for his dedication and bravery. The discipline and patriotism in the Marines never left him, as friends and family will attest. He was proud to be a Marine.

Visitation will be held this Wednesday, June 5th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Carpenter-Fritz & Vice Funeral Home.  Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Carpenter-Fritz & Vice Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Ishmael officiating.  Military honors will performed by the W.N. Fant American Legion Post 5 and Franklin Sousley VFW Post 1834. Burial will be private in Battle Grove Cemetery in Cynthiana.
