Kendall Elwood “Woody” Mitchell, age 86 of Flemingsburg, beloved husband of 37 years to Geneva Mitchell, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at his residence. He was born on March 1, 1933 in Fleming County, a son of the late Sterlie and Mary Hopper Phillips Mitchell. A U.S. Navy veteran, Woody was a gentle, but stern man, who had a heart of gold and the wisdom and knowledge of a world traveler. Woody enjoyed reading frequently and learning of new things in all of life and its offerings. One of his favorite hobbies was antiquing and attending estate sales, having a keen eye for items that had been overlooked in value. He was also a very talented woodworker with artistic abilities that went above and beyond basic carpenter skills. His works included making baskets and wood carvings. He also constructed a covered bridge at his former residence and the log cabin he and his wife lived in before moving to town. In addition to working as a carpenter, Woody also worked at Pioneer Trace Nursing home for 11 years as a maintenance supervisor. Besides his loving wife and best friend, Geveva, he is survived by: daughters, Darlene (Tom) Back of Richmond, VA, Jeanie (Nick) Jarrel of Lexington, and Debbie (Wayne) Montgomery of Mt. Sterling; grandchildren, Anna Back, Lilly Rose Back, Janet Crawford, Kayla Halleran, Alex Halleran, Brandon Vice, Collin Sutton, and Mary Spain; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronald Mitchell; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by: a daughter, Pamela Crawford; sisters, Emma B. Rundell, Elsie Fritz, and Imogene Massey; and brothers, Calvin Mitchell, and Sterlie Mitchell, Jr. Funeral services for Kendell “Woody” Mitchell will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, March 25, 2019 in the chapel of Carpenter-Fritz & Vice Funeral Home officiated by Bro. Jerry Boling and Bro. Clint Stricklen. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Sunday, March 24th at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elizaville Cemetery with Graveside Military Funeral Honors performed by the W.N. Fant American Legion Post #5 and the Franklin Sousley VFW Post #1834. Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Dunaway, Jr., Doug Gulley, Donnie Duncan, Charles Harding, Dickie Dillon, and Tom Back.
