Atha C. Shannon, age 89, of Hillsboro, beloved wife of 64 years to Louis Shannon, passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Wednesday, October 31, 2018. Born in Fleming County on May 4, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Faris T. and Grace Denton Crain. Atha and her husband lived in several different states throughout their lives before their retirement brought them back to Kentucky in 1994. Thirty-one of those years were spent in West Rutland, Vermont where Atha helped answer phones and kept the books for her husband's employer, Moon Freight Lines, Inc. She was also very active in the West Rutland United Church having served as the Treasurer of the Church Women's Group and various school activities. Atha was very active in 4-H, teaching children how to sew and cook. She was an excellent, self-taught cook especially known for her pies. Atha also enjoyed canning the vegetables grown from her garden, traveling, especially to historical sites, making quilts and knitting, having knitted thousands of dishcloths over the years. As early as last year, she made 47 hats for local school kids. Atha was a perfectionist in all she did, always putting others first before her own needs, especially making sure her kids had what they needed. Besides her husband, she is survived by: two daughters, Marsha A. Shannon and Sharon E. Shannon both of Lexington; a son, Kevin D. (Julie) Shannon of Ewing; three grandchildren, Alice M. Shannon, Abby C. Shannon, and Adam D. Shannon all of Ewing; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-great-great-nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by: a sister, Ruth T. Fulton; a brother, Wendell Crain; and an infant grandson, Kyle D. Shannon. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, November 7, 2018 in the chapel of Carpenter-Fritz & Vice Funeral Home officiated by Bro. Jim Hamm and her brother-in-law Rondal Shannon. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Tuesday, November 6th at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elizaville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Hillsboro Christian Church, 85 Denton St., Hillsboro, KY 41049.
